When Volunteers of America Michigan's legal partner kept turning away referrals, we built a program designed to say yes.
In 2016, Volunteers of America Michigan was looking for something different. Their existing legal services partner had a habit of turning referrals away, and they'd seen firsthand how Street Democracy worked with participants inside Street Outreach Court Detroit. They wanted that level of service for their clients directly—so they cancelled their existing contract and brought us on.
That partnership became the foundation for Street Consigliere, Street Democracy's direct legal services program for homeless service providers and their clients. When providers kept hitting walls with other legal partners, we built something designed to say yes.
