Shelter Direct

Holistic, concierge-style legal services for shelter residents who are suffering from poverty.

Shelter Direct pairs a shelter or service provider with an attorney assigned specifically to their clients — paid for by that partner, working closely alongside their staff. We're not physically embedded in the building, but the relationship works the same way: their team knows exactly who their attorney is, and their clients get a direct line to that person.

There's no eligibility screen beyond the referral itself. If the shelter refers someone, we take the case — suspended licenses, open warrants, evictions, public benefits, civil debt, quasi-criminal matters, across as many jurisdictions as it takes.

Most legal aid is siloed by design. One organization handles housing. Another handles criminal records. Another handles benefits. Each has its own eligibility requirements, its own waitlist, its own intake process — and many nonprofits further complicate this by mixing restricted and unrestricted funding, where a grant that pays for housing work can't legally touch a criminal record. We don't accept restricted funding, so that problem never exists for us — every dollar can go wherever the client's actual need is. The client still has to find all these other organizations, qualify for them all, and navigate between them — alone. Most don't make it through that gauntlet, not because their needs aren't real but because the system was never built for them to succeed in it.

Shelter Direct is built differently. A direct line to a lawyer. If we get the referral, we do the work.
